Important Facts About your Sunscreen

  • Apply sunscreen 15 minutes prior to sun exposure.
  • Ensure the sunscreen is "broad-spectrum" which protects against UVA and UVB.
  • Use SPF 30 or higher.
  • Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming.
  • If sweating or swimming, ensure the label says the sunscreen is water-resistant.
  • It takes about 1 ounce of sunscreen to cover the average adult. 1 ounce is often referred to as the amount to fill a shot glass.
  • It is important to apply sunscreen even on cloudy days.
  • Sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months old. Babies younger than 6 months old should be kept away from direct sunlight.

Tips for Sun Protection

  • Try to avoid the sun when ultraviolet rays are the strongest, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Seek shade when available.
  • When possible, wear sun protective clothing (UPF rated clothing), wide brim hats, and sunglasses.
  • Sun burn, sun tanning, and tanning beds significantly increase your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
  • Snow, sand, and water can also reflect UV rays leading to sun exposure.
  • Don't forget to protect your lips with an SPF lip balm!
